On Saturday our U-13 Hornets took the bull by the horns and went out and dominated the competition. The boys went 3-0 against top tier talent:
Best Speed 4 vs Barnstormers 3
Best Speed 5 vs. Fairfield PAL 2
Best Speed 12 vs. Tri Delta Pirates 10
By going 3-0 on the first day assured the Hornets a chance to play in at least the 3rd place game. But their work was not done and on Sunday played a Chico Aces team. The Hornets had their worst game in almost 2 months and spotted the Aces’s team 6 runs in the 1st inning. The Hornets then settled down and only allows 3 runs thereafter in a 7 inning epic comeback. The comeback fell short with the Hornets losing their first and only game of the Tournament 9 to 8. So, by way of default via tournament rules the Hornets had outscored their opponents +8 runs but had allowed -2 runs more than the Aces. It forced the Hornets to have to play in the Red Bracket 3rd place game. In grand fashion and not hanging their heads the team sent out ace Ethan Mayberry and he shut down the Fair Oaks Force ( the team we beat in the Double Header League Championships ) 7 to 2. Led by the hot bats of Casey Whitsell’s , Josh Holland, Darren Gallagher, Kody Gardner, Coleton Brenner , Jordan Vujovich and Backstop powerhouse Raymond Zaragoza the Hornets really put themselves in prime position to have a great compliment from Tournament Director Rudy Rodriguez ” you guys ( your team ) were the top two teams out of the 10 who were here this weekend, you have shown that you are a top team in Northern California and for that I say congratulations and do not stop working hard.” What a great compliment from a great guy, coach and mentor to Coach Alec Smith during his playing days.
” We are going to continue to enforce our game on other teams and make them defend our style of baseball. Our hard work, dedication and pure mental edge will out shine any other team/programs. I and the staff will hold true to these statements and we will continue to PUMP THE PUMP.” – COACH ALEC SMITH
Congrats boys on another successful tournament and good luck in Carson City!
